The Douglas DC-5, the least known among the famous Douglas commercial airliners, was a 16 to 22 passenger, twin-engine propeller aircraft that made its maiden flight in 1939. Unlike its more famous siblings, the DC-3 and DC-4, the DC-5 was produced in very small numbers, with only 12 aircraft built. It was unique for its time, featuring a high-wing design that differed from the low-wing configuration of its predecessors. The DC-5 was designed for shorter runways and had the capability to take off and land on more primitive airfields, making it quite versatile. Despite its limited production, the DC-5 served various roles, including commercial airline operations and military transport during World War II, where it was known as the R3D. Its operational history, though brief, was marked by its versatility and performance, serving with airlines and military forces around the globe.
