The H-21 Shawnee, affectionately known as the 'Flying Banana' due to its distinctive, curved fuselage, is a true icon of rotary-wing aviation. Manufactured by the Vertol Aircraft Corporation (later acquired by Boeing), this tandem rotor helicopter was a workhorse of the 1950s and 1960s. Serving primarily with the United States Army, it also saw action with the Navy and the Air Force, as well as various international operators. The H-21 was pivotal in early Vietnam War operations, excelling in troop transport, medevac missions, and as a gunship.
